Tips

If your computer is lost, it is recommended that you ask the police for assistance. You can also use the Find my device feature of the Windows operating system to locate your computer, and then contact the nearby management departments or organizations to obtain surveillance videos or contact the nearby lost and found site for confirmation. If necessary, you can also provide the location information to the police.

Prerequisite

  1. The computer runs the Windows operating system and you have logged in to the computer using your Microsoft account.

    Click the Windows icon () then the Settings icon (). Go to Accounts > Your info (or Account info). Under Account settings, check the account type of the computer. If Microsoft account is displayed, the computer is logged in to with a Microsoft account.

  2. Find my device has been enabled on the computer. To enable this feature, click the Windows icon () and then the Settings icon (), go to Privacy & security > Find my device, and enable Find my device.

  3. The computer is powered on and connected to the Internet, and the positioning feature is enabled.

    Click the Windows icon () and then the Settings icon (), select Privacy & security, scroll down on the screen, select Location, and turn on the switch for Location services to enable the positioning feature.

Use the Find my device feature to locate the computer

  1. Go to the Microsoft official website (http://account.microsoft.com/devices) and sign in with the Microsoft account that is used to log in to the lost computer.

  2. After sign-in, click Find my device, select the lost computer from the list, and click Find to obtain the location information of the computer.

    Generally, if you log in to the Microsoft account linked to the computer you're looking for via the official Microsoft website and click Find my device, the list will show the last known location of that device that met the positioning conditions mentioned above. If the page doesn't display information related to the computer you're searching for, it means the computer has not met the prerequisites for device location tracking.
