Ads frequently display on my HUAWEI phone/tablet lock screen or while using the device

Problem:

The user's phone/tablet frequently displays pop-up ads, video ads that cannot be closed, or lock screen ads.

Cause:

Malicious adware may have been installed on your phone/tablet.

Solution:

If you are unable to access the home screen on your device, go to step 2. Perform the following steps:

1. Uninstall all malicious apps

(Note: Uninstalling an app may result in all corresponding app data being lost. If the app contains important data, remember to back up this data in advance.)
  • Go to Settings > Apps & services > Apps on your phone/tablet and check for any suspicious apps (such as third-party cleanup, optimization, antivirus, device manager, file management, Wi-Fi connection, free red pocket, and weather apps) and touch Uninstall or continue to touch Deactivate and uninstall to complete uninstallation.

2. Enter Safe mode and uninstall apps

If your phone/tablet frequently displays ads, perform the following to enter Safe mode and uninstall malicious apps:

  • Enter Safe mode
    • HarmonyOS, EMUI 9.1 or later: Hold down on the Power and Volume up buttons when the device is powered off.
    • Versions earlier than EMUI 9.1: Hold down on the Power and Volume down buttons when the device is powered off.
    • Mate 30 Pro: Press the Power button five consecutive times after the phone vibrates upon being powered on.
  • Enter the home screen on your phone/tablet in Safe mode, go to Settings > Apps & services > Apps, find the suspected app, and touch Uninstall or continue to touch Deactivate and uninstall to uninstall the app. After the uninstallation is complete, restart the device to exit Safe mode.

Tips:

  • It is recommended that you update your phone system online and to the latest version. The new version will optimize system performance.
  • It is recommended that you enable Senior mode for the elderly by going to Settings > Accessibility features > Senior mode. Senior mode can prevent malicious app installation and running, safeguard device security, and make it easy to adjust the font size, thickness, icon size, and display size.
  • Exercise caution when downloading apps. When using your phone/tablet, avoid touching ads promising benefits like more memory space, free Wi-Fi, and cash. Try to download any new apps from HUAWEI AppGallery, where all apps have passed a rigorous security check.
