Problem
Desktop icons on a computer running Windows system turn white.
Cause
- This is an issue with the third-party software.
- To accelerate the speed of icons being displayed, the system will cache the icons of files or programs. If desktop icons turn white, it indicates that the cache process is faulty.
Solution
- To rebuild the icon cache, perform the following steps:
- Open File Explorer.
- Since the icon cache file is a hidden file, go to View > Show, and select Hidden items.
- Press Win+R to access the Run window. Enter %localappdata% and click OK.
- Right-click Iconcache.db and select Delete.
- Right-click the taskbar and click Task Manager.
- Open Task Manager, click Details in the lower left corner, select Process, right-click Windows Explorer, and choose Restart from the shortcut menu to rebuild the icon cache.
- Uninstall third-party software and try again. For details, see Uninstall apps in Windows.
