Creating a system image is a good way to back up a computer to an external drive. Windows comes with a system image backup tool that allows you to save a copy of the drive required for Windows to run. If your Windows cannot work properly or start, you can restore it from a system image backup. The detailed procedures are as follows.
- Creating a system image:
- Enter Control Panel in the search box on the taskbar and open it.
- Click System and Security.
- Select Backup and Restore (Windows 7).
- Click Create a system image.
- Select the location where you would like to save the backup and click Next.
You can save a backup on the built-in drive of the computer or on an external device. If you want to save a backup on an external device, the backup must be formatted to NTFS.
- Click Back up and wait until the backup is complete.
- After the backup is complete, a message displays asking you whether to create a system repair disc. Click No and then Close.
- Enter Control Panel in the search box on the taskbar and open it.
- Restoring a system image:
Before restoring the system image, back up important files to an external device.
- Press and hold or continuously press F8 when powering on your computer. Alternatively, back up your files and data, then click the Windows icon and then the Battery icon, hold the Shift key, and restart the computer.

- On the System Image Recovery screen, select an account and enter the account password.
- Select the system image that you want to restore and click Next.
- Click Next.
- Retain the default settings for Your computer will be restored from the following system image, and click Finish.
- In the displayed dialog box, click Yes.
- Wait until the system is restored successfully, and restart the computer.
