Unable to access the Internet when my router is using a static IP address

If there is no Internet access when your router is using a static IP address, perform the following to check your cable connections, computer settings, and service provider restrictions:

1. Verify the cable connections

Ensure that your broadband cable (Ethernet cable connected to the wall-mounted network port or to the modem) is connected to the WAN port of the router. For a wired connection of your computer, ensure that the Ethernet cable is connected to the LAN port of the router. Also make sure that cables are securely connected. If the issue persists, use a different Ethernet cable to see if this resolves the issue.

2. Verify the static IP address

The static IP address must be the same as what is provided by your broadband service provider. Consult your broadband service provider for more information. To check your router settings, log in to the router's web-based management page, click Connect to Internet, and set Internet access mode to Static IP. Then related settings, including the IP address, subnet mask, default gateway, preferred DNS server, and alternate DNS server, will display.

If the IP address is correct but the Internet still cannot be accessed, the DNS server address obtained by the router may be incorrect. You are advised to set Preferred DNS server to 1.1.1.1 and Alternate DNS server to 8.8.8.8.

  • The static IP address must be included in the IP address range of the LAN served by the upper-layer gateway.
  • You can consult the network administrator to obtain the upper-layer LAN IP address, or obtain it from the upper-layer gateway device. Generally, only the last section of your router's static IP address should be different from that of the IP address of the upper-layer gateway. For example, if the IP address of the upper-layer gateway is 192.168.1.1, make sure that your router's static IP address is set to 192.168.1.x, where x is any integer from 2 to 254.

3. Verify computer settings

To enable your computer to automatically obtain an IP address, do as follows:

  1. Connect your computer to the LAN port on your router using an Ethernet cable. Click the network connection icon in the lower right corner of your computer desktop, then select Network and Sharing Center.
  2. Click Change adapter settings. Right-click Local Area Connection and select Status from the shortcut menu.

  3. In the displayed Local Area Connection Status dialog box, click Properties.

  4. Double-click Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4). Select Obtain an IP address automatically and Obtain DNS server address automatically, and click OK.

If the IP address automatically obtained by your computer is 169.254.x.x, disable the LAN connection or wireless connection of your computer, and enable it again.
