Chat History Backup and Restore Guide for WhatsApp

1. Background

WhatsApp allows users to manually or automatically (periodically) back up their chat history locally or to the Google cloud disk, so they can restore the data on a new phone. This guide includes information of how to backup and restore WhatsApp data in different scenarios, please kindly check and follow the instruction step by step.

2. Backup mode

2.1 Procedure of Manual transfer

  • Back up chat history on the old phone
  1. In WhatsApp, touch the three-dot icon in the upper right corner, go to Settings > Chats, and touch Chat backup.

    For some phones, after clicking on Chat backup, prompt up the "Back up to Google Drive" page and then select "Never" on that page.

    After selecting "Never" ,you can click on backup in order for the backup to be done as a local backup.

  2. Go to Files > Internal Storage (Phone storage) > Android > media > com.whatsapp > WhatsApp.
  3. Touch and hold the WhatsApp folder, touch More, and touch Compress. The compressed file is named WhatsApp.zip.

  4. Use Bluetooth or a third-party file transfer app to transfer the WhatsApp.zip package from your old phone to your new phone.

  • Restore the chat history on the new phone.
  1. If the app has been installed, go to Settings > Apps > Apps > WhatsApp > Storage, touch CLEAR CACHE to clear the data.
  2. Go to Files > Phone > Android > media, create a folder, and name it com.whatsapp.
  3. Move WhatsApp.zip to the com.whatsapp folder. Touch and hold WhatsApp.zip, touch More, and touch Extract to decompress it to the current folder.
  4. Go to the Phone> WhatsApp>Databases folder, keep only the msgstore.db.crypt14 file, and delete other files.

  5. Go to Settings > Apps > Apps > WhatsApp > Permissions, and enable the Media and files permission.
  6. When you open WhatsApp for the first time, sign in using your phone number, and enter the verification code. The data restore screen will then be displayed. Touch RESTORE.

Note: You need to sign in using the same WhatsApp account on the old and new phones. Otherwise, data restore will not be triggered.

2.2 Procedure of Phone Clone

Prerequisites:

Both the new and old phones have installed the correct Phone Clone version.

HMS phone (EMUI 8.0 - 11.0.1),ues Phone Clone 12.0.0.410.

HMS phone (later than 11.0.1), ues Phone Clone 12.0.1.410 or later version.

  1. Open WhatsApp on the old phone, go to Settings > Chats > Chat backup, and touch BACK UP

  2. Install and open Phone Clone on both the new and old phones, and connect the two phones as instructed.

  3. Go to Select app and select Apps and data. Then select apps to be transferred.

  4. Open WhatsApp on the new phone and complete data transfer as instructed.

Note: You need to sign in using the same WhatsApp account on the old and new phones. Otherwise, data restore will not be triggered.

2.3 Procedure of Google Drive

  • Back up WhatsApp chat data using Google Drive
  1. Please touch three dots on the right top side corner to open the menu, and then touch Settings to open Settings page in WhatsApp. After that, touch Chats option from the menu, and then touch Chat backup button to open Chat backup page:

  2. Touch Google Account option. It will open Google Services. Touch SIGN IN button on the right bottom side to sign in your Google account. After Signing in, please Allow Google drive access to WhatsApp by touching ALLOW:

  3. Touch Google Account option again in Chat backup page, and then select your account to add your account:

  4. Touch Frequency option and then change the frequency setting by touching Only when I tap Back up, and then, optionally, you can also backup videos by touching include videos toggle button:

  5. Touch Back up button and wait the process is finished:

  • Restore WhatsApp chat data using Google Drive
  1. Before starting WhatsApp, please Add google account. Please open Settings by touching Settings icon in your homepage, and then go to the Users & accounts setting by touching , and touch add account:

  2. After adding Google account in your device, start WhatsApp and do verification of your phone

    Note!! You need to use same phone number and the same Google account

    After the verification, you will see “Restore your chats” Page. Please touch “Restore”button (4), and wait for the restoring process is done:

  3. After restoration, please check if all the chat history data are restored correctly.

2.4 Procedure of using Manual Backup

  • Create WhatsApp chat backup file

Common steps for all EMUI versions:

  1. Touch WhatsApp on the home screen to launch WhatsApp
  2. Touch the three-dot icon in the upper right corner to open the menu
  3. Touch Settings to open the Settings screen
  4. Touch Chats to open the Chats screen

  5. Touch Chat backup and wait for the backup to be finished

  6. Go back to the home screen, touch Files , and then go to Internal storage:

    A. For EMUI 13.x and 14.x: WhatsApp backup files are stored in Android/media/com.whatsapp/WhatsApp. Please open this directory.

    B. For EMUI 12.x and lower version: WhatsApp backup files are stored in the WhatsApp folder on the first page of Internal storage. Please open this directory.

    Common steps for all EMUI versions:

  7. In the WhatsApp folder, you will see the Databases, Media, and Backups folders. Hold down on the Databases folder, and select Media and Backups folders. Touch the More button which is located in the lower right corner, and touch Compress. Change the file name from Databases to WhatsApp and touch OK.

  8. Please save the WhatsApp.zip file to a safe external storage of the user (for example, the user's SD card, secure email, cloud, etc…).

  • Restore WhatsApp data

Before restoring data, please install and launch WhatsApp, and then close it. Check if the WhatsApp folder is created in Internal storage. *If it is not created, please reboot your phone and check again.

A. For EMUI 13.x and 14.x: Open Android/media/com.whatsapp in Files.

B. For EMUI 12.x and lower version: Open the first page of Internal storage in Files.

Common steps for all EMUI versions:

  1. When you see the WhatsApp folder, put the backup file WhatsApp.zip in the dedicated file directory (*As you see above, the directory location will be different for EMUI 14 or 13 and EMUI 12 or lower. The screenshots are from EMUI 12, so it is in the first page of Internal storage as it was mentioned.) Hold down on the file. Touch the More button, and then select Extract to, and touch OK.
  2. Now launch WhatsApp, and go through the verification process of your phone. (*You need to use the same phone number as your old phone to restore your WhatsApp data.) After the process, WhatsApp will find the backup file automatically, and you will see the Restore backup screen.

2.5 Procedure of Phone Clone

  1. Make sure that no accounts are connected to GMS device. Go to Settings > Users & accounts and remove any accounts listed.

  2. On the GMS device download and install Phone Clone from AppGallery. Note that the latest version is required for performing successful clone. Open Phone clone and follow on GMS device, hot-spot will be launched.

  3. On HMS device open Phone Clone, select This is old device and follow steps (steps 6-9) to connect to GMS device hotspot.

  4. Clone WhatsApp following steps 10-17.

  5. WhatsApp should be cloned to GMS, the app icon should be visible on the home screen(step 18), all chat history from HMS device should be visible in the app.

  6. Perform the backup procedure (steps 19-25). Steps (23-24) are OPTIONAL, only if the customer would like to additionally backup to Google Drive – he has to sign in to his Google Account.

  7. Delete WhatsApp from CU’s HMS device, including app data (steps 26-28) and for EMUI 12 devices also backup files in device storage (steps 29a-29b).

  8. Now perform WhatsApp cloning from GMS to HMS device, following steps (2-15) again. After successful cloning finish the transfer on HMS device (step 30).

  9. Open WhatsApp on HMS device, it should not require any verification after launching, and all chat history should be available
  10. Perform local backup of the chat history following steps (step 31-33)

  11. Delete WhatsApp from GMS device, including app data and backup files in device storage (steps 34-37).
