Introduction to Consumables of HUAWEI PixLab X1 Printers |
- What is the drum cartridge?
The drum cartridge, also called photosensitive drum (the green part in the image below), is the most important part of laser printers. It fuses toner from the toner cartridge onto paper, for the laser printer to create text and images.
- What is the toner cartridge?
The toner cartridge is also important for a laser printer. It contains toner used for creating text and images. You need to replace the toner cartridge when the toner is running short or printouts start to fade.
- What is the relationship between the drum cartridge and the toner cartridge?
Both consumables are essential for producing a print. During printing, both the drum cartridge and the toner cartridge consume the toner. When the toner is exhausted, only the toner cartridge needs to be replaced. When the drum cartridge life ends, the drum cartridge needs to be replaced together with the toner cartridge.
- Why does the drum cartridge have a finite shelf life?
- The drum cartridge frictions with paper and other rollers during printing, and so its surface coating gradually wears, and its life reduces.
- The printer is idle when powering on or ready to start a task, which causes the drum cartridge's coating to gradually wear, and causes its life to reduce as well.
- When the drum cartridge's coating wears to a certain extent, the print quality becomes poor, which means the drum cartridge is nearing the end of its life, and a new toner cartridge is required.
- The page yield of the drum cartridge is 15,000 pages. How is the page yield calculated?
- The page yield of HUAWEI PixLab X1 printers' drum cartridge is based upon the ISO/IEC 19752 standard for measuring drum cartridge yields by printing out A4 pages with 5% page coverage at room temperature (25°C) until the cartridge runs empty.
- The service life of the drum cartridge is deteriorated when the printer is idle, for example, when the printer is power cycled, or print tasks are initiated intermittently. Therefore, in actual use, printed images may be blurry before the drum cartridge creates 15,000 pages.
- How can we extend the life of the drum cartridge?
- Avoid power cycling the printer frequently to reduce the times when the printer is idle during startup initialization.
- Avoid using the printer in a high-temperature or high-humidity environment. It is recommended that you use the printer at room temperature (temperature: 5°C to 35°C; humidity: 20% to 80%).
- Try using high-quality paper. The quality of paper is of great importance for the printer's drum cartridge life. High-quality paper can effectively reduce cartridge wear, to extend the life of the drum cartridge.
- Avoid taking out the drum cartridge frequently, as doing so may damage the drum cartridge or expose it to light for a long time.
- What is page yield?
- The page yield of the toner cartridge is based upon the ISO/IEC 19752 standard for measuring toner cartridge yields by printing out A4 pages with 5% page coverage at room temperature (25°C) until the cartridge runs empty.
- To get the page yield of HUAWEI PixLab X1 printers' toner cartridge, A4 paper is used to print the test page (as shown in Figure 1). 1,500 such pages can be printed out.

- Why does a new toner cartridge run out before printing out 1,500 pages?
The type of page you print makes the life of HUAWEI PixLab X1 printers' toner cartridge vary. The page yield will vary depending on the amount of text or images on pages. If most of your printing is half-pages of double-spaced text (as shown in Figure 2), you will probably get more than the cartridge's rated life. On the other hand, if you print a lot of pages with much text (as shown in Figure 3), you will be replacing your toner well before its rated life.
