Unable to run background apps on my HUAWEI phone/tablet

The user switches from one opened app to another, but the second app restarts. Perform the following troubleshooting steps:

1. Clean up space for acceleration

Open Optimizer/Tablet Manager, and touch Optimizer/Optimize. Once optimization is complete, Optimizer/Tablet Manager will display the results and recommended settings. Follow the onscreen instructions to complete the settings.

Open Optimizer/Tablet Manager, and touch Clean up. After the scan is complete, touch Clean up next to the items to be cleaned. Delete redundant files or uninstall apps that are not frequently used, to free up at least 20% of total storage.

2. Check the following settings to prevent the app from being cleared

  • Allow the app to run in the background: Open Settings, search for and access App launch, disable Manage automatically for the app, and enable Run in background in the dialog box that is displayed.
  • Prevent Battery optimization from clearing the app: Open Settings, search for and access Battery optimization, touch Not allowed, select All apps, find apps that cannot run in the background, and select Don't allow.
  • Disable Power saving mode: Go to Settings > Battery, and disable Power saving mode.
  • Keep your device connected to the network: Go to Settings > Battery > More battery settings, and enable Stay connected when device sleeps.
  • Lock a background app: Open the app, access the Recent tasks screen, and swipe down on the app preview to lock it. Close background apps you do not currently need.
  • Set switches in Developer options: Open Settings, search for and access Developer options, find Background process limit and disable it, then select Standard limit for Background process limit.

3. Close background apps you do not need

Your device may run out of memory when too many apps are running in the background simultaneously. As a result, some background apps may be forced to close. It is recommended that you close background apps you do not currently need.

4. Check whether third-party management apps are installed

Third-party management apps may force background apps to close. Uninstall the third-party management apps, and try again.

5. Check for updates

  • Go to AppGallery or the app's official website to update the app to the latest version.

  • Some apps may only support certain system versions. It is recommended that you update your system to the latest version.

6. If the issue persists

This background app issue is common in the system. If an app is running in the background for a long time, the system's sleep mechanism and the app's power saving mechanism will work together to stop the app from running in the background.
