I hear wind noises when I wear my HUAWEI earbuds in a windy environment

The noise cancellation effect of Bluetooth earbuds in a windy environment depends on the wind speed, workout scenario, and wearing fit. When noise cancellation is enabled on Bluetooth earbuds in a windy environment (such as outdoors, during workouts, cycling, or riding in a car), the earbuds' microphones will record significant wind noise (whooshing sounds) if they detect excessive wind volume. As a result, the noise cancellation algorithm reduces its intensity, leading to weaker noise cancellation. This can negatively affect the performance of ANC or Awareness mode, which is normal. When the wind volume decreases, the noise cancellation algorithm will gradually restore to the optimal state within seconds, depending on the magnitude of the wind speed change, earbuds' hardware capabilities, and the algorithm adaptive performance.

In addition, open-fit earbuds, such as the FreeBuds 6, FreeBuds 5, FreeBuds 3, FreeBuds 4E, and FreeBuds 4, are not designed to form a completely airtight seal in the ear canal. As a result, wind can still enter your ear canals while you are wearing them, resulting in more audible noise compared to in-ear earbuds.

If you feel that the wind noise is affecting normal use, try the following steps:

  1. Ensure that your earbuds are up to date.
  2. Ensure that the earbuds fit snugly in your ears: Select a pair of ear tips that best fit your ears and adjust the position of the earbuds to ensure a snug fit. This will reduce the wind noise picked up by the microphones and lower the intensity of the noise cancellation algorithm.
  3. Clean the sound openings and rear air vent of the earbuds. Use a clean and dry cotton swab with a pointed tip to gently remove the dirt and earwax from the mesh, and then use a soft cloth to clean the mesh. This is to prevent the mesh from being blocked by foreign objects, and ensure optimal noise cancellation performance.
  4. Open the AI Life/HUAWEI Audio Connect app, access the earbuds card, tap Noise control, and select Off to disable ANC and Awareness mode.

  • The structure of the HUAWEI FreeLace series earbuds differs significantly from that of the FreeBuds series earbuds. Therefore, wind noise that enters the ears through the structure is more audible in the FreeLace series compared to the FreeBuds series.
  • ANC and call noise cancellation use different technologies to reduce wind noise:
    • ANC: Reduces the ambient noise that you hear.
    • Call noise cancellation: Reduces the noise from you side during calls, which allows the other party to hear you more clearly.

If the issue persists, take your device and proof of purchase to an authorized Huawei Customer Service Center for assistance.
