1. Grant the Physical activity permission to the Huawei Health app

Take a HUAWEI phone as an example: Open Settings, search for and access Apps, and go to Health > Permissions > Physical activity > Allowed.

2. Allow the Huawei Health app to run in the background

Allow the Huawei Health app to run in the background to ensure the app will automatically launch when the phone restarts, so that steps will be counted.

How to set background protection for the Huawei Health app

  • If you're using a HUAWEI phone, swipe up from the bottom of the screen (or touch the Recent tasks icon on the navigation bar if there is a navigation bar) to enter the Recent tasks screen, find Huawei Health, and swipe down on it to lock it. Once locked, you will see a lock icon in the upper right corner.
  • If you're using a third-party Android phone, open the Huawei Health app, touch Devices and then your device card, touch Troubleshooting, and follow the onscreen instructions to complete the setting.

For detailed operations on phones of different brands, see Background protection settings of the Huawei Health App.

  • If you're using an iPhone, keep the HUAWEI Health app running in the background, and do not swipe up to close the app.

  • The iOS system has a memory management mechanism. To ensure that the phone runs smoothly and to better manage power consumption, apps that have been running in the background for a long time will be removed.
  • If you are using a third-party Android phone, go to Settings > Battery > Battery management > Background power consumption management > Huawei Health, and select Allow high background power consumption. If you select Smart control, the app may be removed from the background.

3 Exercise continuously for at least one minute

The Huawei Health app leverages the step counting sensor on the phone to record steps and requires a little time to detect that you are working out. If the step count in the Huawei Health app does not increase while on a walk, continue walking for one minute, and then check whether the step count has increased.

4. Restart your phone

If the issue persists, restart your phone, swipe down on the home screen of the Huawei Health app to sync data, and check the step count.

  • If your phone does not support step count, or the Huawei Health app displays a message indicating that your phone does not support step count due to hardware limitations or the app does not support step count on this phone, you can wear a watch/band to record your steps. Once your watch/band is linked with the Huawei Health app, step data will also display in the app.
  • Both the watch/band and the phone use the accelerometer to count steps. The sensor identifies steps based on movement and acceleration in different directions. If the step count on your watch/band differs from that in the Huawei Health app, the possible causes are as follows:
    1. The Huawei Health app intelligently merges the data recorded by the watch/band and phone that have been logged in with your HUAWEI ID, whereas the watch/band displays only the step count it records.
    2. Since phones tend to be placed in pockets or bags, the sensor mainly detects the change of acceleration of gravity (vertically). However, the watch/band is usually worn on the wrist, and the sensor mainly detects arm movement, which is more accurate and scientific. These different detection modes may lead to different step counts.

5. If the issue persists

  • HUAWEI phone users: Back up your data and take your phone and proof of purchase to an authorized Huawei Customer Service Center for assistance.
  • Non-HUAWEI phone users: Back up your data and contact the corresponding manufacturer for assistance.
