Voice calls are not clear on my HUAWEI earbuds
| Voice calls are not clear on my HUAWEI earbuds |
This document applies to the earbuds models such as the FreeBuds series, FreeLace series, FreeClip series, and FreeArc.
HUAWEI FreeArc/FreeClip features an open-ear design. It provides a breathable fit, but cannot match in-ear or open-fit earbuds in terms of isolating noises. Avoid making calls using the earbuds when there is noise or strong wind, or while you are cycling.
If the other person cannot hear clearly or feels low volume during a call, perform the following steps.
- When you connect the earbuds to a computer, or make a voice call in a third-party app, the earbuds' microphones are not used to pick up your voice, and therefore the volume from the earbuds may be low. For guidance on how to use earbuds to record audio, see When will my HUAWEI FreeBuds/FreeLace series earbuds record my audio?
- FreeBuds Pro 5/FreeBuds Pro 4/FreeBuds Pro 3/FreeBuds Pro 2/FreeBuds Pro earbuds use bone voiceprint call noise cancellation technology to minimize ambient noise and make your voice sound clearer, but at a slightly lower volume level. This is normal and does not indicate an issue with your device.
- High levels of external noise can affect call quality. Try to avoid making calls using the earbuds when there is noise or strong wind, or while you are cycling.
- Wearing a helmet or mask can affect the sound pickup quality of the microphone. Remove the helmet or mask before making a call.
- If the earbuds are worn too loosely, the sound pickup effect may be affected. Adjust the position of the earbuds in time during calls to ensure that the microphone at the bottom of the earbuds points towards your mouth. If your earbuds are not worn securely, change to a suitable size of ear tips for in-ear earbuds, or add ear tips for open-fit earbuds.
- Poor signal can affect the call quality. It is recommended that you make calls in a good signal environment.
- If the microphone and mesh of the earbuds are blocked by foreign objects or if liquid has entered, the call quality may be affected. It is recommended that you clean the earbuds once a week and do not wear the earbuds when you are showering, taking a steam bath, or swimming. If your earbuds come into contact with any liquids, such as rain or sweat, use a piece of dry, ultrafine microfiber cloth to wipe them clean. Do not use the earbuds or place them back in the charging case until they are completely dry. Use a clean and dry pointed cotton swab to gently brush off the dirt and earwax from the mesh of the earbuds, and then wipe them clean with a soft cloth.
- While both earbuds can receive audio from the other party during calls, only the primary earbud (the one first taken out of the case) is able to transmit audio. Make sure that you wear the primary earbud properly.
- Update the phone system and earbuds' firmware to the latest versions.
- After you connect your earbuds to your phone, you may have selected your phone as the calling device, mistakenly or not. In this case, the person you are calling will be unable to hear your voice when you talk to the earbuds. Switch the audio channels on your phone to the earbuds.
- During a call: On the call screen, change the audio output device to the connected earbuds, as shown below.
- During media playback:
- On phones running EMUI 10.0 or later: Swipe down from the top of the screen and select the connected earbuds as the audio output device in the Device connectivity section.
- On phones running an EMUI version earlier than 10.0 or non-HUAWEI phones: Go to , then disconnect and re-connect the earbuds before playing audio again.
- For FreeArc/FreeClip earbuds, which do not include ear tips, adjust the earbuds to get the best possible fit.
- If you are using FreeClip earbuds, make sure that the acoustic balls fit your auricles and the sound outlets face towards your ear canals, so that the microphone and bone conduction component can better pick up voice signals and provide better call quality.
- If you are using FreeBuds Studio, adjust the width and ear cups to create a snug fit on your ears, for optimal sound quality and noise cancellation.
- For FreeLace series earbuds, if you put the control panel on the right away from your mouth, like somewhere behind your ears, the person you are calling may experience low volume. Put the control panel near your mouth. If voice calls are not clear on the earbuds when you only wear one earbud, wear both earbuds for a better experience.
- There is a known compatibility issue with OPPO R11. If you make a call on an OPPO R11 wearing FreeBuds series earbuds, your voice may sound faint. Huawei is working to resolve this issue. You can also report the issue to the phone manufacturer by going to .
If you cannot hear clearly or feels the volume fluctuates during a call, perform the following steps.
- Volume adjustment may not be synced between your device and the earbuds. Increase the volume on both your device and earbuds. For more information, see Use the earbuds or speaker to adjust the volume.
- Select a pair of suitably-sized pair of ear tips and adjust the way you are wearing the earbuds to ensure that the earbuds fit well in ear canals, to isolate any external noise. Alternatively, enable the noise cancellation feature, if available on your earbuds.
- Avoid making calls using the earbuds when there is noise or strong wind, or while you are cycling.
- If you are using FreeClip series earbuds, make sure that the acoustic balls fit your auricles and the sound outlets face towards your ear canals, so that the earbuds can provide better call quality. Refer to here to learn more about how to wear your earbuds.
- If you are using FreeArc earbuds, make sure that the acoustic beans fit in the cavum conchae of your ears (as shown in blue in the following figure) and the sound outlets face towards your ear canals, so that the earbuds can provide better call quality. Refer to here to learn more about how to wear your earbuds.

If the issue is not resolved, reset your earbuds, pair them with your device once again (keep the device within 10 meters of the earbuds), and try again. If the issue persists, take your device and proof of purchase to an authorized Huawei Customer Service Center for assistance.
